Back in the 1980s, a 16-year-old boy from Purandar, a taluka in the subdivision of Pune, landed in the Pune city in search of livelihood. With little education and no means to earn a living, he began selling milk to make ends meet.
As months passed, the idea to sell tea blossomed in his mind and he sets up a tea stall, climbing the stairs of success gradually, and renting a small shop in Pune’s camp district. As he begins to save up a little money from his business, he buys a shop in Salisbury Park in 1983. That’s when a small cup of tea, which lead in the making of Yewale Amrutalay, began creating magic for Dashrath Yewale.
With his special tea, his business flourished, and Dashrath opened two more outlets, one in Appa Balwant Chowk and another near Bharti Vidyapeeth in Pune. Alongside tea, snacks were introduced on the menu and life took a turn for the young boy who once just aimed to satiate his hunger.
When Dashrath passed away in 2001, his son Navnath Yewale and his brothers made sure not to put a full stop on their father’s beautifully carved journey. They decided to take Yewale Amrutalay to new heights and fulfil their father’s dreams, to have his own brand and product. Since then, there was no looking back.
Once again, the journey began for the Yewale family, but this time, with extensive market research and development. “We spent around five months standardising our tea, using the same proportion of milk, tea, spices, and sugar. While the boiling of tea is set to seven minutes, the milk is boiled twice before getting used for the tea, to ensure that the tea tastes the same in all the branches,” tells Navnath, the director of the newly branded firm, to a website.
Every day, from five in the morning to 9.30 in the night, Yewale Amrutalay sells over 5,000 cups of tea, in their three branches across the city, with each cup priced at Rs 10. With 16 employees in their organization, they earn revenues upto Rs 12 lakh a month. The brothers plan to expand to 100 branches and give employment to 10,000 people.
The tea house fills itself with 1,000 kgs of sugar and 300 kgs of tea powder every month, with just one motive, to meet the expectation of every tea lover and blow their minds.
As monsoon steps into the year and the tiny droplets wakes up the nature from a deep sleep, we take a hot cup of tea, with the sweet earthy smell adding on to its flavor. And as we take a sip, a 16-year-old boy, who comes to the big city to earn a living, smiles and sleeps peacefully.
